“Do You Like What You See?”

How to Engage the Social Impact of Media on Women and Girls

Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to what young girls and impressionable young women think about the way other women are exposed through social media.  The media’s influence on young girls and women can have a profound effect on their self image. Join the American Association of University Women (AAUW) on Friday, October 1, 2010 beginning at 8:15 a.m. at Clarkson University for a day-long discussion on media literacy and constructions of femininity. “Do you like what you see? How to engage the social impact of media on women and girls” will be a frank and open conversation on the negative and positive effects the media can have on girls and young women. All aspects of media will be explored; including, YouTube, Facebook and images seen on television.

Break-out sessions will be held in the afternoon on topics that will guide participants toward understanding why these images can have a hold on young girls. The day will include presentations from Deborah Borie, Too Sexy, Too Soon; and Value U Coordinators, Jennifer L. Ball, Ph.D. & Jessica Willis, Ph.D covering media exposure for girls and women from birth to college-age.   Cathy Pircsuk, General Manager of WWNY-TV/WNYF-TV in Watertown, will be on hand to answer questions about corporate media. Ms. Pircsuk will also moderate an afternoon plenary.

Participants will leave the daylong conference equipped with the tools necessary to deconstruct media messages and be able to have an honest and open conversation about the negative or positive behaviors associated with how girls and women are portrayed through television and social media. Certificates of completion will be available to participants.  This conference is sponsored by the Jefferson County and St. Lawrence County branches of AAUW.
