AAUW Summer Conference, Cazenovia College, July 20 – 22, 2012

Lynn Schwabenthal, Judy Munoz, Karen Carr, Jeri Fairman, Janice Brown, Doris McLallen from Jefferson County AAUW and Donna Seymour and Kathleen Stein from St Lawrence County AAUW attended the New York State Summer Convention at Cazenovia College, July 20-22 2012.  Over 70 New York State AAUW members spent the weekend sharing ideas and experiences in the beautiful college setting.

After dinner on Friday evening our new AAUW New York President Mary Lou Davis welcomed the group and Dr Susan Berger, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Cazenovia College spoke about Developing an Authentic Leadership Style.   Donna Seymour, NYS Public Policy and Kimberly Fountain, State Grassroots Advocacy Coordinator from national AAUW presented the AAUW Manual for Community-Based Campaigns to Mobilize Women to Vote.

Saturday was devoted to an interesting and helpful workshop “Unlock Your Potential: Personal and Professional Development Strategies for Success” presented by Geeta Desai, national trainer and immediate past president of Poughkeepsie AAUW.  Late in the afternoon our own Karen Carr, 2013 NYS AAUW Convention Director and Jean Havens NY State Program Vice President lead a brain-storming session about the April 2013 NYS AAUW Convention at Lake Placid.  After dinner we watched “Babies”, a highly entertaining documentary film about the lives of four international babies from from birth to just learning to walk.

Sunday we broke into two groups for two workshops, and then had a presentation on college group affiliates. Jefferson County College AAUW student group advisor, Katie FitzGerald came in Sunday morning for the college group affiliates presentation.  Our last discussion was on “My Sister’s Keeper” programs.

All in all this was a wonderful weekend and well worth the trip.  I hope that more of our members will take the opportunity to attend next year’s summer convention at the beautiful Cazenovia College.
